How to Use Claude Code Scheduled Tasks
Check Requirements: Ensure you have Claude Code v2.1.72 or later installed. You can check your version with 'claude --version' command
Access Scheduled Tasks: There are two ways to create scheduled tasks: 1) Type /schedule inside any task in Cowork, or 2) Click 'Scheduled' in the left sidebar and click '+ New task'
Configure Task Details: Provide the following details: task name, description, prompt instructions, frequency (hourly/daily/weekly/weekdays/on-demand), model choice, and working folder
Set Schedule: Choose when you want the task to run. You can use cron syntax (e.g. '0 9 * * *' for 9am daily) or select from preset options. Times are interpreted in your local timezone
Enable Permissions: If the task needs to run autonomously (edit files, run commands), you'll need to enable autonomous execution which adds --dangerously-skip-permissions flag
Verify Task: Run the task once manually to verify it works as expected before letting it run on schedule
Monitor Tasks: Use CronList tool to view all scheduled tasks. A session can hold up to 50 tasks. Tasks only run while your computer is awake and Claude Desktop app is open
Manage Tasks: Use CronDelete tool to remove tasks when no longer needed. Tasks automatically expire after 3 days for safety. Set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_CRON=1 to disable scheduler entirely
Claude Code Scheduled Tasks FAQs
Scheduled tasks allow Claude to automatically re-run prompts on an interval. They fire between your turns (not while Claude is mid-response), and if Claude is busy when a task is due, the prompt waits until the current turn ends. All times are interpreted in your local timezone.
