What is Plakar

Founded in 2024 and based in Paris, Plakar emerged from a project started by Gilles Chehade in August 2019 as a response to limitations in existing backup solutions. It is designed to be a lightweight, flexible, and scalable backup platform that can protect anything from local files to multi-cloud AI pipelines. The platform emphasizes simplicity, efficiency, and compatibility, making it particularly relevant for teams working in fast-moving or regulated industries such as AI, finance, healthcare, and cybersecurity where data integrity and recovery capabilities are crucial.

Key Features of Plakar

Plakar is an open-source backup and restore platform that provides encrypted, queryable backups with a focus on simplicity and efficiency. It features end-to-end encryption, powerful deduplication, and compression algorithms, allowing users to increase restore points without increasing costs. The platform operates through CLI, API, and UI interfaces, making it accessible for engineers while ensuring data integrity and security through its Kloset technology, which packages data with all necessary metadata and context.
Kloset Technology: An immutable data store system that packages data with all metadata and context, ensuring consistency and portability across different storage systems
End-to-End Encryption: Secure by design with comprehensive encryption that has passed cryptographic audit, ensuring data safety throughout the backup process
Advanced Deduplication: Unmatched deduplication and compression algorithms that allow for multiple restore points without increasing storage costs
Multi-Interface Access: Flexible access through CLI, API, and UI interfaces, making it adaptable to different user preferences and operational needs

Use Cases of Plakar

AI Workflow Protection: Ideal for backing up and versioning large AI datasets and pipelines where data integrity and rollback capabilities are crucial
Financial Data Management: Suitable for financial institutions requiring secure, compliant, and traceable backup solutions with instant recovery capabilities
Healthcare Data Protection: Perfect for healthcare organizations needing to maintain secure, compliant backups of sensitive patient data with long-term accessibility
Multi-Cloud Infrastructure Backup: Efficient for organizations managing data across multiple cloud platforms and local systems requiring unified backup solution

Pros

Open-source transparency and community-driven development
High performance with efficient resource usage
Strong security with cryptographic audit approval
Flexible deployment options with multiple storage backend support

Cons

Relatively new platform still in beta phase
Requires technical expertise to fully utilize features
Limited documentation compared to established solutions

How to Use Plakar

Install Plakar: Install Go 1.23.3 or higher first, then compile Plakar from source (as packages are not yet available)
Create a Repository: Run 'plakar at /var/backups create' to create a new backup repository. You'll be prompted to set a repository passphrase for encryption
Create Your First Backup: Use 'plakar at /var/backups backup /path/to/backup' to create a backup of any directory
List Backups: Run 'plakar at /var/backups ls' to see all backups in the repository with their timestamps and sizes
Restore Backups: Use 'plakar at /var/backups restore -to /restore/path snapshot_id' to restore a backup to a specific location
Compare Backups: Use 'plakar diff snapshot1_id snapshot2_id' to see differences between two snapshots without restoring them
Access Web Interface: Run 'plakar at /var/backups ui' to start the web interface for browsing and managing backups
Sync to Remote Storage: Use 'plakar at /var/backups sync to @s3' to synchronize your backup repository to S3 or other remote storage
Create Multiple Repositories: You can create multiple repositories by specifying different paths with 'plakar on /path/to/repo create'
Browse Without Restoring: Use the web interface or CLI commands to inspect backup contents without performing a full restore
