Download and Install: Download PaintTool SAI from the official website (systemax.jp/en/sai/). The trial version is available for 27 days. Install it on your Windows computer (compatible from XP to Windows 11).
Launch and Set Up Interface: Open SAI and familiarize yourself with the main interface components: Color/Tool Panel (typically on right), Layer Panel (typically on left), and Quick Bar at top. You can customize panel locations through the Window menu.
Create New Canvas: Click File > New to create a new canvas. Select your desired canvas size from presets or enter custom dimensions. You can have multiple canvases open simultaneously.
Understand Layer System: Use the Layer Panel to create and manage layers. Create new layers using the icons in the Layer Panel. Layers help separate different elements of your artwork and work similarly to Photoshop layers.
Select and Use Tools: Familiarize yourself with the main tools: Pen (for linework), Brush (for painting), Airbrush (for soft effects), Marker (for shadows), and Blur (for blending). Each tool can be customized for pressure sensitivity and other settings.
Work with Colors: Use the Color Wheel and RGB/HSV sliders to select colors. Save frequently used colors in the Swatches panel. The Color Mixer allows for custom color mixing and saving palettes between sessions.
Save and Export: Save your work regularly using File > Save in the native .SAI format. To share or use in other programs, export your artwork in common formats like .PSD or .BMP using the File > Export option.
