Airhive is a direct air capture (DAC) technology company founded in 2022 and based in London, UK. The company is developing an innovative DAC approach that combines fluidized bed reactor technology with a novel geochemical sorbent to capture carbon dioxide from the air quickly and cost-effectively. Airhive aims to deliver accelerated CO2 removal and provide a rapid path to scaling up DAC technology to address climate change.
How does AirHive work?
Airhive's patent-pending process utilizes fluidized bed technology, commonly used in industrial applications, and optimizes it for carbon capture. The system uses naturally carbon-absorbing rock minerals that are reformed into small particles with high surface areas. These particles are then 'fluidized' in a reactor, creating a turbulent cloud where they rapidly collide with and absorb CO2 molecules from the air. The process is highly efficient, capturing over 99% of CO2 from air passing through the central vessel in less than 0.1 seconds. Airhive's DAC systems are modular units primarily made of steel, allowing for easier scaling and deployment.
Benefits of AirHive
Airhive's technology offers several key benefits in the DAC industry. It provides very high capital efficiency and low operational costs compared to traditional DAC methods. The system's modular design and use of proven industrial processes with existing supply chains enable rapid scaling and deployment. Airhive's approach also optimizes for energy efficiency and speed of CO2 removal. These factors combine to make Airhive's DAC technology a promising solution for large-scale, cost-effective carbon dioxide removal to combat climate change.
