Proteus is an autonomous mobile robot developed by Amazon Robotics to transport and handle heavy package-carrying carts, known as GoCarts, in Amazon's fulfillment and sort centers. Unveiled in 2022, Proteus represents a significant advancement in Amazon's robotics capabilities, as it is designed to operate freely in spaces shared with human employees, unlike previous robots that were confined to caged areas. Proteus aims to automate the movement of heavy loads while improving workplace safety and efficiency.
How does Proteus work?
Proteus utilizes advanced safety, perception, and navigation technology to move autonomously through warehouse spaces. It employs a two-step detection and motion process to accurately position itself under GoCarts. First, the robot performs a small 'S' curve to eliminate lateral positioning errors. Then, it moves in a straight line to slide under the cart and lift it. Proteus uses light, sound, and physical movements to communicate its state and intentions to nearby workers. When a person enters its path, Proteus automatically stops, waits for the individual to move, and then resumes its journey. This allows for safe coexistence with human workers in dynamic warehouse environments.
Benefits of Proteus
By automating the handling of heavy GoCarts, Proteus reduces the physical strain on employees, allowing them to focus on other tasks that require human skills. This can lead to improved workplace safety by minimizing the risk of injuries associated with manually moving heavy loads. The robot's ability to work alongside humans without the need for segregated areas increases operational flexibility and efficiency in fulfillment centers. Additionally, Proteus's autonomous navigation and adaptability to unexpected changes in its environment contribute to smoother warehouse operations and potentially faster processing times for customer orders.
